Children in foster care: All that you need to know!

2 min read

In the US, more than 400,000 children are in foster care. State-wise tally is not very positive either, and in Arizona alone, close to 13,000 children need help. There are numerous reasons why children end up in foster care, but it mostly happens when their family is going through a hard time or crisis. Children of all ages, including teens, are ending up in foster care, and these are kids who have been abused, neglected, not cared for by their own parents. Sometimes kids may need to be kept away from their parents because of habits and other reasons, but when they are in foster care, they are expected and supposed to have contact with their family, with regular visits.

Regardless of whether you are interested in helping nonprofit organizations that help these kids, or want to know more on charitable donation deduction, it is necessary to be active. These children in foster care need community support, and even the slightest help or gesture can make a big difference.

‘Sorry, but we cannot become foster parents. How can we help?’

If parents are unable to take care of the child, foster parents can step up and take responsibility, so that the child get the best kind of normal life as possible. They are licensed adults, who can be relatives or nonrelatives, and have to be trained caregivers. Not all children end up with foster parents or stay with them. Some end up in group settings. If you cannot become a foster parent, fret not, there are varied ways to help.

  • Cash donations to charitable organizations are the best means to help these kids. Depending on certain factors, your donation can qualify for Arizona Foster Care Tax Credit, or whatever option is available in your state. You can decide on a monthly contribution, or can give a onetime amount.

  • Give in kind. Many nonprofit charitable organizations that are working with children in foster care need goods. From books and clothing, to musical instruments and sponsoring graduation expenses, you can consider to fund and support numerous things, depending on what you can afford.
  • You can also work at the office of these organizations and help the staff, or can get involved with the events and other things that are planned from time to time.

Every step counts, and as a responsible and caring citizen and community member, consider helping these kids, because they need us more than ever.
